Social Distancing

A term we’ve seen thrown around far more recently than ever before and with good intentions.

While it is important to distance ourselves from each other to prevent the spread of disease we need to remember not to keep our distance from the one who truly matters. Now more than ever we should be using every opportunity we have to focus on our relationship with God.

2 Peter 3:18 says this “But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To Him be glory both now and for ever.”

While social distancing is important, as humans we have a desire to be around other humans, it’s in our nature to be social and because of that we are drawn to one another. Even as Christians God calls us to be surrounded by other believers in prayer and worship of Him. Even though that may be challenging in present situations we need to remember not to let fear separate us but to have courage and trust God with our decisions. I’m not saying to go against authority and throw a huge party at your church but I am saying that while we should respect our governments decisions we need to be obedient to God’s Word. Get creative during this time, whether it be live streaming your church or connecting remotely with a small group find ways to grow spiritually and stay connected.

For the introverts, I know that the previous paragraph is uncomfortable but try taking a step out of your comfort zone and reach out. God didn’t call us to be hermits but to grow, love and support one another. If connecting remotely isn’t possible don’t waste this time God has given you. Yes, I believe this time of social distancing and self-quarantining God has, uniquely, provided to allow believers to grow in their faith by trusting in Him and developing a deeper relationship with Him. Rather than wasting your time on TikTok or binging your favorite show, open the Word of God and allow Him to speak to you. Take time out of your day to pray, go for a walk or sit outside and simply meditate on all that God has done in your life. Despite the chaos, take a moment to find rest, healing and strength in our loving and caring Father in Heaven.

Social distancing is vital to our safety as a nation during this time but it doesn’t have to be spent alone or in fear. We should feel strengthened by the love and support we have for one another as a community and a body of believers but more importantly we ought to be encouraged by the truth that God is still on the thrown and in control of this dire situation.

Whether you are spending this time alone, with family or a loved one we must not forget that God is in control and when you choose to place your faith in Him He will help you overcome. No amount of toilet paper will protect you or care for you like our God will. Trust in Him and you will never have to feel alone.
